I am a designer and design researcher whose work sits between languages and cultures. Moving from China to the United States has shaped how I see design: as a practice that travels unevenly across scripts, institutions, and communities.

I am currently a Ph.D. student in Design at North Carolina State University, advised by Dr. Deborah Littlejohn. My research develops a principle-based framework for Multilingual Typesetting. I am also deeply committed to design education, particularly design higher education.

Before NC State, I earned an M.A. in Human Centered Design from Cornell University, with a concentration in Design for Interaction and a minor in Anthropology; an M.A. in Graphic Design and Visual Experience from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD); and a B.F.A. in Visual Communication Design from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts (TAFA) in China.

Outside of research, I photograph, with a particular interest in Northeast Asian documentary traditions. Welcome to my world of design and photography.

Resume/CV

Graphic design isn't just a profession for me; it's a fervent passion. While I may not be able to pinpoint a singular 'design style' that defines me, I take pride in my prowess in illustration, my affinity for font design, and my meticulous approach to typesetting. The entire design process, from conception to realization, brings me immense joy.

Having received the most structured and comprehensive design education in China, coupled with diverse professional experiences, I thought I had a firm grasp on the design world. However, when I set foot in the United States in the summer of 2019, I was introduced to a radically different design education paradigm. This shift prompted introspection: What, at its core, is design? A question so fundamental, yet one that I found myself grappling with, despite it having been posed and answered myriad times before. This existential design quandary propelled me towards the scholarly realm of design research. While I may still be searching for that elusive answer, my unwavering faith in the transformative power of design remains intact. Welcome to my envisioned design utopia.

MY POWERPUFF

TYPOGRAPHY CLASS PROJECTS at SCAD Vol.II

  • 04/2021

This was a typography course assignment at the Savannah College of Art and Design. I chose The Powerpuff Girls as my theme. The purpose of this class is to train typesetting ability. I am very happy to share this work with you.

Start with your initial analytical concepts and develop your own creative ideas. From history to detail, I believe you can discover more and richer aspects of the Powerpuff Girls.

The final presentation is based on a medium such as a newspaper, hoping to use the most realistic and common media to demonstrate the most flexible typesetting possibilities.
